TiMBL is an open-source software package implementing memory-based learning algorithms for supervised machine learning, primarily used in NLP.
TiMBL, or "Tilburg Memory-Based Learner," is an open-source software package that implements several memory-based learning algorithms. These include IB1-IG, a k-nearest neighbor classification with feature weighting for symbolic feature spaces, and IGTree, a decision-tree approximation of IB1-IG. The core principle of these algorithms is to explicitly store a representation of the training set in memory, classifying new cases by extrapolating from the most similar stored examples.
For over fifteen years, TiMBL has been predominantly used as a machine learning classifier component in natural language processing, though its application extends to virtually any supervised machine learning domain. Its decision-tree-based implementation often makes it more efficient in classification compared to standard k-nearest neighbor algorithms. TiMBL is free software, distributed under the GNU General Public License, and can be installed via package managers, Docker, or manual compilation.
