T5 (Text-To-Text Transfer Transformer) is a research project by Google that provides code for reproducing experiments from the paper "Exploring the Limits of Transfer Learning with a Unified Text-to-Text Transformer." It demonstrates how to achieve state-of-the-art results on multiple NLP tasks using a text-to-text transformer pre-trained on a large text corpus. The repository primarily contains code for loading, preprocessing, mixing, and evaluating datasets, and for fine-tuning pre-trained models. The T5 library is designed for future model development, offering modules for training and fine-tuning large models on mixtures of text-to-text tasks. It includes components for defining Task objects that provide tf.data.Datasets, text preprocessors to convert examples into input/target formats, and token preprocessors. T5 offers shims to connect Tasks and Mixtures to model implementations, including one for the Mesh TensorFlow Transformer used in the original paper and an experimental one for the Hugging Face Transformers library, allowing fine-tuning on a single GPU with PyTorch. For larger models and reproducing paper results, the MtfModel API is recommended, while the HfPyTorchModel API is suitable for GPU-based fine-tuning in PyTorch.
