SRI's Artificial Intelligence Center conducts research into computational principles of intelligence and develops AI systems.
SRI's Artificial Intelligence Center (AIC) researches the computational principles underlying intelligence in both humans and machines. The center develops methods for building computer-based systems that can learn, perceive, interact with the world, reason, and make decisions. Their activities span machine learning, mixed-initiative planning, intelligent assistance, robotics, and biochemical pathway analysis for drug discovery. Founded in 1966, the AIC has made significant contributions to AI, including mobile robotics (Shakey, Centibots), search (A* algorithm), expert systems (PROSPECTOR), image understanding (RANSAC algorithm), information extraction (FASTUS), and intelligent agents (PRS). Technology developed at the center has been applied in military contexts and licensed to several spin-off ventures, such as Siri (acquired by Apple) and Tempo AI (acquired by Salesforce).
