PaLM is a 540-billion parameter, dense decoder-only Transformer model designed for advanced language understanding and generation.

PaLM (Pathways Language Model) is a large language model developed by Google Research, featuring 540 billion parameters. It is a dense decoder-only Transformer model trained using the Pathways system, which enables efficient training across multiple TPU v4 Pods. This system allowed for scaling training to 6144 chips, achieving a high hardware FLOPs utilization of 57.8%. PaLM was trained on a diverse dataset including English and multilingual web documents, books, Wikipedia, conversations, and GitHub code. It utilizes a "lossless" vocabulary to preserve whitespace, split out-of-vocabulary Unicode characters into bytes, and numbers into individual digit tokens. The model demonstrates state-of-the-art few-shot performance across a wide range of language understanding, generation, reasoning, and code-related tasks, often surpassing prior large models.
