PaLM-E is an embodied multimodal language model that integrates real-world continuous sensor modalities into language models for robotics and visual-language tasks.

PaLM-E is a large embodied multimodal model designed to incorporate real-world continuous sensor modalities, such as images and state estimations, directly into language models. This integration establishes a link between linguistic input and real-world perceptions, enabling the model to perform general inference in physical environments, particularly for robotics problems. The model processes multi-modal sentences that interleave visual, continuous state estimation, and textual input encodings, training these end-to-end with a pre-trained large language model. The architecture of PaLM-E injects continuous, embodied observations into the language embedding space of a pre-trained language model, specifically PaLM. It encodes these observations into a sequence of vectors with the same dimension as the language token embedding space, allowing continuous information to be processed analogously to language tokens. As a decoder-only LLM, PaLM-E generates textual completions autoregressively based on a given prefix or prompt. It has been evaluated on various embodied tasks, including sequential robotic manipulation planning, visual question answering, and captioning, demonstrating positive transfer from diverse joint training across internet-scale language, vision, and visual-language domains. PaLM-E, particularly its largest version (PaLM-E-562B), is not only trained on robotics tasks but also functions as a visual-language generalist, achieving state-of-the-art performance on OK-VQA and retaining generalist language capabilities. It can plan and execute long-horizon tasks on different robots, incorporating visual feedback and generalizing to unseen objects or scenarios. Beyond robotics, it also excels as a Vision-Language Model, capable of complex visual reasoning and question answering.
