P-Tuning v2 is a prompt tuning method for Natural Language Understanding (NLU) that matches fine-tuning performance with fewer tuned parameters.
This research paper introduces P-Tuning v2, an optimized implementation of Deep Prompt Tuning specifically adapted for Natural Language Understanding (NLU) tasks. Prompt tuning involves tuning continuous prompts with a frozen language model, which significantly reduces storage and memory usage during training compared to traditional fine-tuning methods. The paper addresses previous limitations of prompt tuning, which often performed poorly with normal-sized pretrained models and struggled with complex sequence labeling tasks. P-Tuning v2 demonstrates universal effectiveness across various model scales and NLU tasks, achieving performance comparable to fine-tuning while only requiring 0.1%-3% of the parameters to be tuned. The authors propose P-Tuning v2 as a viable alternative to fine-tuning and a strong baseline for future research in the field.
