NSynth Super is an open-source experimental instrument that generates new musical sounds using a deep neural network.
NSynth Super is an experimental physical interface for the NSynth algorithm, developed by Google's Magenta project. It allows musicians to create music using novel sounds generated by machine learning. The NSynth algorithm employs a deep neural network to learn sound characteristics and synthesize entirely new sounds by combining the acoustic qualities of multiple source sounds, rather than simply blending them.
The prototype instrument enables exploration of over 100,000 precomputed sounds derived from 16 original source sounds. Users interact with dials to select source sounds and a touchscreen to navigate the generated sound space. NSynth Super is an open-source project, with all technology, design, source code, schematics, and design templates available on GitHub, built using libraries like TensorFlow and openFrameworks.
Key Features
- Generates new sounds using NSynth algorithm
- Explores over 100,000 precomputed sounds
- Combines acoustic qualities of 4 source sounds
- Touchscreen interface for sound navigation
- MIDI input compatibility (DAW, sequencer, keyboard)
- Open-source hardware and software
Pros
- Generates unique sounds difficult to achieve with traditional synths
- Provides intuitive control over timbre and dynamics
- Open-source nature allows for community experimentation and development
