LIBLINEAR is a library for large-scale linear classification and regression, designed for data with millions of instances and features.
LIBLINEAR is a machine learning library developed by the Machine Learning Group at National Taiwan University. It specializes in linear classification and regression tasks, particularly efficient for large, sparse datasets. The library supports various L2-regularized classifiers, including L2-loss linear SVM, L1-loss linear SVM, and logistic regression, as well as L1-regularized classifiers and L2-regularized support vector regression (SVR) and one-class SVMs.
Key features include multi-class classification strategies (one-vs-the-rest, Crammer & Singer), cross-validation for model evaluation, automatic parameter selection, and probability estimates for logistic regression. It also supports weights for unbalanced data and offers interfaces for multiple programming languages like MATLAB/Octave, Java, Python, and Ruby. LIBLINEAR is noted for its speed on document classification tasks and is an alternative to LIBSVM for large datasets where linear models are sufficient.
Key Features
- L2-regularized classifiers (L2-loss linear SVM, L1-loss linear SVM, logistic regression)
- L1-regularized classifiers (L2-loss linear SVM, logistic regression)
- L2-regularized support vector regression (L2-loss linear SVR, L1-loss linear SVR)
- L2-regularized one-class support vector machines
- Multi-class classification (one-vs-the-rest, Crammer & Singer)
- Cross-validation for model evaluation
- Automatic parameter selection
- Probability estimates (logistic regression only)
Pros
- Highly efficient for large-scale linear classification and regression
- Supports various regularization and loss functions
- Offers interfaces for multiple programming languages
- Includes multi-core support for faster training
- Winner of ICML 2008 large-scale learning challenge
Cons
- May be slow in situations other than document classification with default solver
- Recommended for large datasets; LIBSVM is suggested for smaller datasets or beginners
- Primarily focused on linear models, not suitable for non-linear mappings without external kernels
- Requires some understanding of machine learning concepts for optimal use
- Documentation might be technical for beginners
