This feature integrates grammar correction directly into Gboard on Pixel 6, operating entirely on-device to ensure user privacy. It detects and suggests corrections for grammatical errors as the user types, addressing challenges like memory limitations, latency, and handling partial sentences. The system is currently available for English sentences across almost any app using Gboard. The underlying technology is a sequence-to-sequence neural network, combining a Transformer encoder with an LSTM decoder for a balance of quality and latency. To optimize for mobile devices, the model employs techniques such as shared embedding, factorized embedding for large vocabularies, and post-training quantization, resulting in a compact 20MB model that performs inference quickly. Training involves a hard distillation technique, using a large cloud-based grammar model to generate high-quality training data from public web sentences. This process also includes handling sentence prefixes to enable real-time correction even before a sentence is complete, which is particularly useful in messaging apps. The on-device model then aligns original and corrected sentences using Levenshtein distance to provide specific replacement suggestions.
