This paper presents a meta-learning strategy using deep neural networks to address item cold-start problems in recommendation systems.

The paper focuses on addressing the item cold-start problem, which is particularly challenging in dynamic environments like Tweet recommendation where new items are constantly introduced. Matrix factorization, a common recommendation technique, struggles with this scenario due to a lack of historical data for new items. The authors propose a meta-learning strategy implemented through two deep neural network architectures. One architecture learns a linear classifier where weights are derived from item history, while the other learns a neural network with adjustable biases. These techniques were evaluated on real-world Tweet recommendation data at Twitter, demonstrating significant improvements over matrix factorization baselines and existing production models.
